Professional Development Requirement
The American Society of Cost Segregation Professionals desires that its Members and Certified Members continue to grow in their knowledge of cost segregation and regularly invest in the society.
In 2024, the ASCSP inaugurated a requirement that each Member and Certified Member must obtain 10 Professional Development Units (PDUs) each year in order to remain in good standing with the society and maintain their credentials.
Following are examples of how PDUs are earned:
- Attend ASCSP Technical Call = 1 PDU per call attended
- Attend ASCSP Conference = 10 PDUs
- Present at annual conference session = 3 PDUs
- Present ASCSP Webinar = 3 PDUs
- Author an article that is published on behalf of ASCSP = 4 PDUs
- Represent ASCSP at outside conferences = 4 PDUs
- Attend professional development webinars offered outside of the ASCSP but relevant to our field = up to 3 PDUs per year max
- You may receive PDUs by serving one of the ASCSP committees (Conference, Testing, Education, Membership, Marketing, Technical Standards, or Ethics). If you have interest in serving on a committee, contact any Board member. Examples:
- 2 PDU per exam graded on the Testing Committee
- 1 PDU per committee meeting attended
- Serve on the ASCSP Board = 1 PDU per board meeting attended
- Proctor an ASCSP Exam = 2 PDUs
- Recruit another member to serve on an ASCSP Committee = 3 PDUs
- Documentation of PDUs earned in this manner should be forwarded to: pdu@ascsp.org
The Membership Committee will notify members mid-year of how many PDUs they have obtained up to that point. If you have questions about this process, please contact us at: pdu@ascsp.org
Professional Development Units (PDU)
Consequences for Members & Certified Members who do not obtain the PDU requirement in a calendar year.
(1) Members and Certified Members have been asked to meet a minimum threshold of 10 PDU’s for each calendar year. Those members that do not meet the 10 PDU requirement will be put on probation for the following year or until they make up the missing PDU’s. Members & Certified Members will need to make up the missed PDU’s over the course of the next two calendar years. They will at least need to make up ½ of their missing PDU’s over the course of each year.
a. Example. Mr. Smith only has 4 PDU’s out of 10 in the 2025 year. He is on probation and will need the normal 10 PDU’s in 2026 plus at least 3 out of the missing 6 from 2025. Essentially, Mr. Smith will need to have 13 PDU’s in 2026 and 13 PDU’s in 2027 to catch up on the missing PDU’s from the 2025 calendar year. If Mr. Smith were to obtain 16 PDU’s in 2026, then he would be taken off of probation at that time he reaches 16 PDU’s. His normal 10 for the year plus the 6 missing from the 2025 year.
(2) If the Member or Certified Member (who is already on probation) fails to meet the required threshold of 10 PDU’s plus half of their missing PDU’s from a previous year, their membership will be reduced to an Associate level until such a time as they make up the gap in their missing PDU’s. At such a point, they would need to email the committee at pdu@ascsp.org to ask for reinstatement. Both members on probation and members with their membership reduced to Associate level should contact the committee to discuss what is necessary for them to get back to being good standing with the society.
(3) Those individuals applying for reinstatement would not need to retest so long as they have not been out of the society for more than 2 calendar years.
(4) The Membership Committee will be available to answer questions on what level of PDU’s would be required to get back to being in good standing with the society. The purpose of the committee is not to be punitive, but rather to assist Members with staying in good standing with the society. We encourage Members to email the pdu@ascsp.org email address with any questions.
(5) The Member may make known to the committee if there are extenuating circumstances which should be considered. The committee may choose to confer with the board in such cases.
(6) If a former Member has been put on probation multiple times, due consideration may be given and the Membership Committee may ask for the recommendation of the board as to how a former member may rejoin the society. More serious measures may be needed in such situations where former members have been on probation multiple times.
(7) Fellows are not required to meet the 10 PDU requirement.
**The 2024 calendar year was the inaugural period for the Membership Committee and the PDU requirement for ASCSP members. Some members may have been unaware of the PDU requirement until later in the year. For those Members that made a substantial effort to obtain PDU’s once they learned of the PDU requirement, they will avoid probation from the 2024 calendar year. Those members that did not make a substantial effort will be notified by the committee that they are on probation and will have a discussion about a reasonable path moving forward. (So please reach out to the pdu@ascsp.org email address to begin that discussion) All members should now be aware of the 10 hour PDU requirement for the 2025 calendar year and moving forward, per the rules stipulated above.
